Athletic Greens calls themselves “The Most Nutrient Dense Whole Food Supplement Available”. Tim Ferris (author of The Four Hour Work Week) says this is the most important supplement he takes. It is one of the best selling health products on Amazon, with a 4.4 out of 5 rating to boot.
Out of all the green powders that there are on the market, you don’t see many making claims like this or receiving the high amount of praise that this product has been receiving.
You also don’t see many at the price point that Athletic Greens occupies.
So is it all it has been cracked up to be? Let’s dive in and take a closer look at this green drink.
What Makes Up Athletic Greens?
Table of Contents
Athletic Greens boasts over 75 (!) ingredients in it’s formula. These ingredients are broken down into four categories:
- Alkaline, Nutrient Dense, Raw Superfood Complex
- Nutrient Dense Natural Extracts, Herbs and Antioxidants
- Digestive Enzymes
- Super Mushroom Complex Dairy Free Probiotics
It would take the entire review to go over each ingredient, but it seems safe to say they have quite a few of the bases covered.
Some notable mentions include spirulina, wheat grasses (including wheat juice powder and alfalfa powder), chlorella powder, citrus bioflavonoids extract, rhodiola rosea root extract, R and S forms of alpha lipoic acid, reishi and shiitake mushroom extracts, as well as many of your essential vitamins and nutrients. These would include Vitamin A, C, E, Calcium, and Zinc to name a few.
Of important note is also the 7.2 billion probitiocs found within the green powder. They use two highly tested and proven strains, Lactobacillus Acidophilus and Bifidobacterium Bifidum.
Here is the comprehensive ingredient list.
Quality and Quantity?
Nearly all of these ingredients are organic, and each batch of the powder goes through stringent testing requirements. They use a TGA-registered, Good Manufacturing Practice Certified facility in New Zealand.
New Zealand is notorious for being one of the strictest health monitoring bodies in the world. Additionally, they conduct analytical and microbiological testing on each batch of Athletic Greens, and they are able to trace each batch of product back to the original source in the factory.
It’s pretty obvious that the manufacturers of Athletic Greens take serious pride in the quality of their ingredients.
Take Note of Ingredient Amounts
So you can be sure the ingredients are top-notch, but it’s hard to tell if there’s enough of each ingredient to provide a real benefit. Athletic Greens does provide the actual vitamins and minerals found in each serving of the product, which is something most of their competitors don’t do.
But when it comes to ingredients such as Chlorella powder, it’s tough to imagine that there is really enough of it in each serving to have a measurable effect on your cells. Having said that though, you are getting SOME of each ingredient, and this is still one of the most complete products I’ve ever seen. If you can afford it, taking two servings of powder every day would give your body an even greater boost.
What About The Taste?
One of the worst things about drinking any green drink is the atrocious taste. Athletic Greens bucks that trend by tasting fairly decent. Now we aren’t saying you are going to fall in love with the flavor, but it is miles above any other green drink. The beverage is slightly sweet and is also has a spicy kick, which they accent with the addition of ginger.
What Kind Of Prices Are We Looking At?
At $97 (or $7.25 per ounce) a bag, Athletic Greens is pretty expensive, sometimes twice as much or even 3 times as much as other green powders. Compared to Garden of Life Green Superfood Powder, which comes in at $3.97 per ounce, it is quite fairly expensive.
The reason costs this amount is because these other products do not contain anywhere near the vitamins, minerals and enzymes that Athletic Greens contains. According to the Athletic Greens website, you would have to spend at least $444 and take a minimum of 11 different supplements and 20 pills a day to equal the superfood ingredients contained in AG.
I’m not entirely sure how accurate this is, but taking a look at the ingredients and knowing the general price of many of the supplements, I’d say it would be well over $200 to even begin to touch the amount of stuff in AG.
The company that manufacturers Athletic Greens is well aware of their price point, and makes no excuse for it and actually take pride in it. They boil it down to yes it’s expensive, but it works, and your health it worth it.
Let The People Speak
What drew me first to Athletic Greens was the claim of being the most nutrient dense super food, what really hooked me though was the overall great reviews I was seeing for this product all over Amazon and in Internet.
Amazon has it at a solid 4.4 out of 5, with over 1400 reviews as of my last check. There are tons of stories of people gaining energy from the product and feeling better overall. One reviewer was dealing with a bout of gastrointestinal issues, and after one week of using Athletic Greens they noted they were much more regular and had higher energy levels overall.
There are some negative reviews, about 7% of the reviews are 4 star and 5% are 3 stars or lower. Most all of these reviews said the product was good, but the price was way too high and they couldn’t justify buying the product when there are other green drinks out there, some at 1/3 of the price of Athletic Greens.
The Final Say
Overall, Athletic Greens is a potent superfood cocktail that includes an incredible amount of high quality ingredients. It is quite expensive at around $97 a bag, but the quality you get with each scoop is well worth the price, if you can afford it.
